What is Asscher Cut?

The Asscher cut is a rounded square with large step-cut facets. An Asscher Cut somewhat shares a resemblance to that of an Emerald Cut. Although the Emerald Cut is considered a lower quality derivative of the Asscher cut! The Asscher cut is known for its large facets, high crown, and deep pavilion. The hypnotizing geometry and crisp and clean lines make this a statement and timeless shape.

History and Origin of Asscher Cut

The Asscher Cut was created in the year 1902 by the famous gemstone cutter Joseph Asscher and named after his family name. His family were renowned diamond cutters who were very well-established in the diamond-cutting industry. Founded in Amsterdam in the year 1854, the Asscher family was known for cutting some of the world’s most important and largest diamonds. The most well-known is the Cullinan.

While designing the famous Asscher cut, he wanted to modify the classic beauty of the Emerald Cut and leverage the beauty found within rough diamonds to produce a more brilliant diamond! The final design involved larger step facets, a higher crown, and a smaller table to provide extra brilliance along with the “hall of mirrors” effect. The Asscher Cut was the first cut to be granted a patent and only the Asscher Company could produce it until after World War 2.

This cut was soaring at its highest during the Art Deco period when geometric aesthetics dominated jewellery design. This is one of the reasons why the Asscher Cut exhibits vintage and sophisticated appeal.

Benefits of Asscher Cut?

What is Royal Asscher Cut and how is it better than the Asscher Cut?

The original Asscher Cut diamond was created by Joseph Asscher putting this shape on the path of popularity! The Asscher family was known for their utter dedication towards diamond craftsmanship and artisanship. When this cut was introduced, during those times most of the diamond cuts were quite simple and not so sparkly. This famous Asscher Cut was a celebrated shape during the Art Deco movement. The original patent expired during World War 2 along with the destruction of the Asscher Diamond Company. Although the shape still owns up to the Asscher family name instead this particular shape was simply known as “square emerald cut” and will be listed in the same manner on a Diamond Grading Certificate. Anyone can cut this shape and is not held to any strict standards of brilliance.

In 1999, Edward Asscher became aware of this fact and decided to attend the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) seminar. Since he was wearing a placard across his chest, people repeatedly asked if they could buy an Asscher Cut diamond from him. This motivated him to return and create an even more beautiful design with his brother Joop.

After two years of research, the Asscher family finally developed the Royal Asscher Cut. The inspiration for this cut came from the family’s historic cut, the Cullinan Diamond in the British Crown Jewels! The new Royal Asscher Cut has 74 facets and a modern look.
